Day 1: Hanoi to Bac Ha (Saturday)
Leave Hanoi early via the expressway, watching the urban landscape transform into rolling green hills as you head toward the Lao Cai highlands. Arriving at Bao Nhai, swap your car for a traditional motorized longboat. Cruise upstream along the stunning Chay River, navigating a breathtaking limestone canyon where jungle-draped cliffs rise sharply from the emerald water. Step ashore at Trung Do village, a peaceful Tay ethnic minority hamlet. Enjoy a scenic walk past traditional stilt houses and green cornfields, stopping to visit the historic Trung Do Temple. Finally, rejoin your vehicle for a dramatic climb up the winding mountain pass. Pass beautiful terraced fields and arrive by late afternoon in the cool, charming highlands town of Bac Ha.
Day 2: Bac Ha Market (Sunday) to Sapa
Thousands of inhabitants in the region come together in their colorful costumes. The Sunday market is the most important event of the week. Afternoon when the market has dismissed, we leave Bac Ha and taka a scenic drive toward Sapa, the main town of the Hoang Lien Son mountains. We walk down the valley to Cat Cat village and observe the ways of life of the Black H’mong.
Day 3: Sapa & Fansipan
The morning is to explore Fansipan and the peak complex. Take a very scenic train ride over Muong Hoa valley. Visit Ban May, a collection of ethnic houses. Take the cable car up to the peak complex and hike up to the 3,143 meter summit. Afternoon is for an easy hike in Muong Hoa valley and visit Ta Van village of the ethnic Dzao people.
Day 4: Sapa to Mu Cang Chai
Today we take a journey across the enormous Hoang Lien Son range to its western side. Mu Cang Chai is listed as a National Landscape. In Mu Cang Chai we take a bike ride to the viewpoint in Mam Xoi and Mong Ngua. Enchanting scenery of rice terraces gives us numerous photo opportunities. We spend the night in an eco-lodge.
Day 5: Tu Le to Hanoi
Leaving Mu Cang Chai we drive eastward, continuing through scenic landscape. After taking the famous Khau Pha pass, we descend and take a walk to explore the village of Lim Mong and Lim Thai in the valley of Tu Le. Continue the drive through the valley of Muong Lo where we can see vast expanse of flat land for rice cultivation. Before dark, we arrive in Hanoi.
