(By People Who’ve Lived Here for 33 Years — Based on Our Vietnam Insider Journey)
If you’ve been searching for a 15 day Vietnam itinerary, you’ve probably already waded through dozens of travel blogs that all say the same thing. Hoi An is beautiful. Ha Long Bay is unmissable. Try the pho.
You deserve better than that.
We are VietOne Travel, a Destination Management Company (DMC) based in Ho Chi Minh City. Our founder Thomas Weigelt has been living and working in Vietnam since 1993 — that’s experience you can’t distil from a guidebook. Our team brings over 100 years of combined on-the-ground knowledge of this country.
What you’re reading here is not a generic travel blog article. It’s an honest walkthrough of our most-booked programme: the Vietnam Insider Journey — 15 days, 12 destinations, from Hanoi to the Mekong Delta.
This trip was built for travellers who want to understand Vietnam — not just photograph it. It works for couples, families, and solo travellers alike. And every hotel, activity, and route described below is exactly what VietOne delivers.

Why This Programme Works
Most Vietnam itineraries are either too rushed or too shallow. The Vietnam Insider Journey solves this with smart geographic logic: north to south, with domestic flights placed at exactly the right moments so no day is wasted on pointless transfers.
Here’s what sets it apart from a standard package holiday:
- Private transport: no sharing buses with strangers, no waiting for stragglers
- English, German and Russian-speaking guides: locals who know their country deeply and genuinely love showing it
- Carefully curated accommodation: handpicked hotels, regularly inspected by the VietOne team
- Real contact with everyday life: floating markets, village visits, cycling through paddy fields
- Fewer tourist traps: Cat Ba instead of the overcrowded Ha Long Bay terminal
- Culinary depth: from a mandarin dinner in Hue to a Can Tho floating market at dawn
The Route: 15 Day Vietnam Itinerary, Honestly Described
North to south. Private transfers throughout. Domestic flights: Hanoi to Hue, and Hoi An to Saigon.
Day 1 — Arrival in Hanoi
Your local guide and driver meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours — time to shake off the jet lag, take a first walk through the Old Quarter, or simply rest. If you arrive in the morning, optional afternoon activities are available on request.
📍 Accommodation — Hanoi Boss Legend Hotel — centrally located, comfortably fitted, consistently well-reviewed by VietOne guests.

Day 2 — Hanoi: History, Streets, Everyday Life
A full day in the capital. We start early at the Ho Chi Minh Memorial Complex — the mausoleum, the Presidential Palace and its gardens. Then an electric car ride through the buzzing Old Quarter with its 36 medieval guild streets, followed by a walk through the living city: street kitchens, craftsmen, temple doorways most visitors walk straight past.
💡 VietOne Local Tip Experiencing Hanoi before 8am is a completely different city — tai chi at Hoan Kiem Lake, street kitchens still without tourists. Anyone who sleeps through it misses the Hanoi that Hanoi actually is.

Day 3 — Hanoi to Mai Chau: Into the Mountains
We leave the city suburbs and drive through hilly midland towards the mountain valley of Mai Chau. The landscape shifts dramatically: rice terraces, water buffalo, small villages of bamboo and wood. On foot, we visit the ethnic Thai villages of Ban Lac and Pom Coong before checking into an ecolodge beautifully positioned on the hillside overlooking the valley.
📍 Accommodation — Mai Chau Sol Bungalows — perched on the hilltop with panoramic views over the paddy fields. Consistently one of the highlights guests mention most.

Day 4 — Mai Chau to Ninh Binh: Karst Hills and Rowing Boats
From the mountains back to the lowlands. The drive to Ninh Binh is itself an experience: jagged limestone karst hills rising from flat green paddy fields — a landscape that feels like Ha Long Bay moved inland. In Tam Coc, we board a rowing boat and glide along the river winding through towering limestone cliffs and mysterious cave tunnels.
📍 Accommodation — Ninh Binh Ninh Binh Legend Hotel — quietly set, with views towards the karst hills.

Day 5 — Ninh Binh to Cat Ba: The Smarter Alternative to Ha Long Bay
This is one of the smartest decisions in this itinerary. Instead of joining the overcrowded Ha Long Bay cruise terminal, we drive to Hai Phong and take the speedboat to Cat Ba Island — sitting in the heart of the bay itself. In the national park, a light hike through subtropical forests, mangroves and hidden caves awaits.
💡 VietOne Local Tip Cat Ba receives a fraction of Ha Long Bay’s visitors but offers the same views without the crowds. The Lan Ha Lagoon — which we explore the following morning — is considered by those in the know to be more beautiful than the more famous parts of the bay.
📍 Accommodation — Cat Ba Catba Island Resort — directly on the water, with views over the bay.

Day 6 — Lan Ha Lagoon to Hanoi
By boat we explore the Lan Ha Lagoon — less visited, less crowded, and breathtaking. Thousands of bizarre limestone islets and cliffs form a backdrop that defies description. Early afternoon, back to the mainland by boat and a drive to Hanoi.

Day 7 — Hanoi to Hue: Imperial Grandeur
A domestic flight to Hue, the former imperial capital of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802–1945). We visit the Citadel and the Imperial Tomb of Minh Mang — architecture and decorative detail that feels closer to Versailles than to any travel cliche about Southeast Asia. A boat trip on the Huong River brings us to the sacred Thien Mu Pagoda. In the evening, a mandarin dinner: one of Vietnam’s most historically elaborate meals, once prepared for emperors.
📍 Accommodation — Hue Moonlight Hue Hotel — quiet location, excellent breakfast, short distance from the old city.

Day 8 — Hue to Hoi An: Cycling Through Rural Vietnam
Today, no bus. We explore the countryside around Hue by bicycle — quiet country lanes through villages and rice fields, an authentic rural market in the early morning routine. In the afternoon, we drive to Hoi An. En route, a stop in Da Nang at the Cham Museum — one of the most important sculpture collections in Southeast Asia, frequently overlooked by travellers. The evening is spent in Hoi An as the coloured lanterns are lit.
📍 Accommodation — Hoi An Hoi An Silk Village Resort — away from the tourist centre, quieter, with genuine character.

Day 9 — My Son: The Forgotten Sanctuary
Today we cycle to My Son — the former religious centre of the Champa civilisation, which once extended across the entire stretch of central Vietnam. After an introduction at the visitor centre, we walk through lush green hills in search of the last preserved temple complexes. A UNESCO World Heritage Site that most travellers don’t have on their radar.
💡 VietOne Local Tip My Son is often compared to Angkor Wat — unfairly, because it’s smaller and therefore more intimate. Standing here with a knowledgeable guide gives you a cultural understanding of Vietnam that no museum in the world can match.

Day 10 — Hoi An to Saigon
A final morning walk through the UNESCO-listed old town of Hoi An: the Japanese Bridge, the Fujian Temple, the old Phung Hung merchant house. Then a domestic flight to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).
Day 11 — Saigon: Loud, Alive, Slightly Overwhelming
A guided morning through the city’s most compelling highlights: the Cathedral Square, Ben Thanh Market, the Thien Hau Temple with its remarkable ceramic works. In the afternoon, a four-hour drive towards Can Tho in the Mekong Delta — so we’re in position to reach the floating market early the next morning.

Day 12 — Can Tho to Chau Doc: The Mekong Delta Up Close
An early start is very much worth it. We let the boat drift, watch the floating market in action, observe the daily rhythm of river trade. Later, a visit to the colonial Binh Thuy House, then onward to Chau Doc — where we enter the spectacular Tra Su nature reserve, a flooded mangrove forest full of birds and silence.
📍 Accommodation — Can Tho / Chau Doc TTC Can Tho / Chau Pho Hotel — both carefully vetted by VietOne for quality and comfort.
Day 13 — Chau Doc to Saigon
One more time on the water: a visit to a floating fish farm and a close-up look at an industry that defines the Mekong Delta’s economy. Then we make our way back to Saigon.

Day 14 — Cu Chi Tunnels: History Underground
A morning excursion to the Cu Chi Tunnels — a 250-kilometre underground network built by the Viet Cong during the war. It makes history tangible in a way that a museum simply cannot. The afternoon is yours: one last market, one last bowl of pho, or simply letting the city wash over you.
📍 Accommodation — Saigon Bay Hotel — central, comfortable, trusted by VietOne guests.
Day 15 — Departure
At leisure until transfer time. If you have a late flight, we arrange additional activities or extended accommodation on request. We wish you a good journey home.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this trip for?
For anyone who wants to genuinely experience Vietnam, not just tick it off. The programme includes some moderate cycling (Days 8 and 9) and light hiking, but it is not an adventure travel programme. Couples, families with children aged around 12 and up, and older travellers with a reasonable level of fitness are all equally comfortable on this itinerary.
When is the best time to travel on this route?
October to April is optimal for the full route. November to February is particularly pleasant — dry, warm, and significantly less crowded than the European peak summer months. We advise against booking this itinerary in July and August, as Hue and Hoi An experience heavy rainfall during that period.
How do we get a price in Euro?
VietOne works primarily with travel agencies and tour operators. Pricing in € is available through our B2B portal or directly from our team in Ho Chi Minh City. Contact us at vietone.travel/contact-us — we respond within 24 hours in English, German or Russian.
Can the route be customised?
Yes. The Vietnam Insider Journey is our framework, not a rigid schedule. We adjust pace, accommodation, optional activities and trip duration for every group individually. Just talk to us.
Is Vietnam safe for European travellers?
Very much so. Vietnam consistently ranks among the safest destinations in Southeast Asia. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. In major cities, we advise keeping your phone in your bag when walking near traffic — our guide covers all practical tips on arrival day.
