Nha Trang Excursions: Islands, City Highlights and Da Lat, and When Each One Works

Quick answer

The two Nha Trang excursions that matter are a boat day around the bay islands and a half-day city tour. VietOne runs both: the full-day island tour (about 8 hours: Tri Nguyen Aquarium on Hon Mieu, a fishing village with basket boats, the beach on Hon Tam) and the half-day city tour (about 4 hours: Institute of Oceanography, Long Son Pagoda, Po Nagar towers, Hon Chong). Da Lat is not a sensible day trip: the road over the Khanh Le Pass takes 3.5 to 4 hours each way. The boat season runs January to August.

Nha Trang excursions usually get booked halfway through a beach week, when clients have had enough sun and want to see something. The menu of Nha Trang excursions in town is long, but three directions are worth selling: the islands, the city itself and the highlands of Da Lat. This guide covers what our two tours include, how long they take, what clients staying near Cam Ranh airport should know, and why Da Lat needs an overnight.

Island day: the Nha Trang excursion most clients want

Our Nha Trang full-day island tour leaves from Cau Da tourist port on a wooden motorboat. The first stop is Hon Mieu island and the Tri Nguyen Aquarium, built to look like a shipwreck. On the far side of the island is a fishing village, where clients can paddle a round basket boat themselves; parasailing from a nearby pontoon is possible at extra cost. The boat then crosses to Hon Tam island for beach time, views over the bay and snorkelling on the reef.

In the late afternoon the boat returns to the port and the driver takes clients back to their hotel.

Included: private vehicle, guide, full-day boat, entry to the aquarium, the basket boat and the Hon Tam beach zone, plus water. Not included: parasailing, jet skis and tips.

Of all the Nha Trang excursions clients ask about, Hon Mun is the one for divers and keen snorkellers. It was the core of Vietnam’s first marine protected area, set up in 2001 and now part of the Nha Trang Bay protected area. It is not part of our tour; specialist dive operators run trips there.

City half-day: Nha Trang in four hours

The Nha Trang half-day city tour starts with a hotel pick-up. First the Institute of Oceanography, founded in 1922, with its large collection of marine specimens. Then Long Son Pagoda and the white Buddha on the hill, about 24 metres tall, the Cham towers of Po Nagar, and the boulders of Hon Chong headland. Entry tickets, car and guide are included. It works best early in the stay: clients understand the city and can spend the other days at the beach without feeling they missed it.

Staying near Cam Ranh? Plan the drive

Many resorts on Bai Dai (Long Beach) are much closer to Cam Ranh airport than to Nha Trang, while Cau Da port and all the city sights are in town. For these clients, Nha Trang excursions simply start earlier in the day. Both of our tours include the car and driver, so no separate transfer is needed.

Da Lat from Nha Trang: make it an overnight

Da Lat sits at about 1,500 m, with pine forests, lakes and cool evenings, a complete change from the coast. The catch is the road. The drive on Route 27C over the Khanh Le Pass is about 135 km and takes 3.5 to 4 hours each way. The pass itself is roughly 33 km of bends and is prone to landslides in heavy rain; in November 2025 a rockslide hit a coach there.

As of early October 2026, repairs at nine landslide points were still under way, with completion targeted for November; until then the pass is closed to traffic at night and daytime traffic can be held for roadworks. Check the latest status before confirming. As VnExpress International reported, fog is common too.

Our advice: keep Da Lat off the list of one-day Nha Trang excursions and sell it as a two-day trip, drive in daylight and avoid the October to December rains. We do not publish a Da Lat-from-Nha Trang package, so we build it to order. Background on the town is in our Da Lat travel guide.

When Nha Trang excursions work best

Vietnam’s official tourism site gives January to August as the best time for beach and island trips, with rain from September to December. Long-term averages agree: Nha Trang has 18 rain days in November and four in February. Boat-based Nha Trang excursions can be moved when the sea is rough, so put the island day early in the stay and keep a spare day.

How to fit Nha Trang excursions into a beach week

  • Day 2: city tour in the morning, before the heat.
  • Day 3 or 4: islands, if the sea is calm; otherwise the next calm day.
  • Last days: beach, spa or mud baths. Never leave the spare island day for departure day.

Clients still deciding on a base can use our Da Nang or Nha Trang checklist, and our Nha Trang travel guide covers beaches and hotels. Guide availability matters for Russian-speaking groups; see our Russian market guide.

FAQ

Which Nha Trang excursions should clients book for a one-week stay?

The city half-day early on and the island day when the sea is calm. That covers the essentials; the rest of the week is for the beach.

How long is the Nha Trang island tour?

About 8 hours, with hotel transfers, which makes it the longest of our Nha Trang excursions.

Can clients do Da Lat as a day trip from Nha Trang?

It is possible, but it means seven to eight hours on a mountain road. We recommend two days with an overnight.
