Hanoi in 2–4 Days: A Short Program Built from VietOne Tours

Most clients do not fly to Vietnam for Hanoi alone. Hanoi is usually the first or the last stop. That makes it easy to rush. This Hanoi itinerary guide shows how to fill two, three or four days with tours VietOne already sells. Each block links to its package page, so you can check the details before you quote.

Hanoi itinerary: Hoan Kiem Lake and the red The Huc Bridge

Why Hanoi itinerary works as a short block

The main sights are close together. Ba Dinh Square, the Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter fit into one day with a car and a guide. The best-known trips out of the city, to Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh, also start in Hanoi.

So you can sell Hanoi in modules. Start with one or two city days. Then add a day trip, or two nights away. The client’s budget, energy and flight times decide how far you go. You do not need to rebuild the trip each time. You add or remove a block.

Days 1–2: the city modules

VietOne sells two Hanoi city tours. Both come with a private car, a driver, a local guide and hotel pick-up.

Hanoi Half Day City Tour (4 hours). It starts at Ba Dinh Square, with a photo stop outside the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. Then a walk through the Presidential Palace gardens, past Ho Chi Minh’s house on stilts. Next comes Quan Thanh Temple. After that, Hoan Kiem Lake, with Ngoc Son Temple and the red The Huc Bridge. It ends with a walk in the Old Quarter.

Hanoi Full Day City Tour (8 hours). The same core, plus the One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature. The day ends with a late-afternoon show at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre. Lunch is not included.

How to use them:

  • Arrival day. If the client lands in the morning, keep the day free or add the half-day tour in the afternoon. After a long-haul flight, less is more.
  • First full day. Book the full-day tour. It covers the main sights in one go.
  • Do not book both. The half-day tour is a shorter version of the full-day tour.

Leave the evenings open. Hanoi after dark is a reason to stay on its own. Our guide Midnight in Hanoi has ideas you can pass on to clients.

Day 3: one day trip out of Hanoi

For a three-day stay, add one day excursion. VietOne has three.

Halong Bay Full Day Excursion. The drive goes to Tuan Chau harbour. Clients board a shared day-cruise boat and have lunch on board. In the afternoon they visit the Thien Cung and Dau Go caves. It is the famous name. But the drive there and back takes a big part of the day. Kayak hire is not included. For an honest view of the bay, read our Halong Bay guide.

Hanoi Bac Ninh Full Day Excursion. Two craft villages. In Dong Ho, clients print their own woodblock picture and take it home. In Bat Trang, they visit the Ceramic Museum and the market, then try the potter’s wheel with a local artisan. Lunch is not included. It is hands-on and works well for families.

Full Day Excursion to Duong Lam. An old village west of Hanoi, with laterite walls and narrow lanes. Clients see the Mong Phu village gate and hall, Mia Pagoda and the tomb of King Ngo Quyen. There is a stop for green tea and chè lam, a local ginger rice sweet. It is quiet and rural.

Rule of thumb:

  • Ha Long for first-time visitors who want the big picture.
  • Bac Ninh for families and clients who like crafts.
  • Duong Lam for repeat visitors and clients who want calm.

Days 3–4: Ha Long and Ninh Binh with nights away

With four days, take the client out of the city for two nights. The Hanoi – Ha Long – Ninh Binh (3 Days) loop does this.

  • Day 1. But Thap Pagoda in Bac Ninh, then Bat Trang pottery village. Drive to Ha Long. Free time at Bai Chay Beach.
  • Day 2. A day cruise on Ha Long Bay (the day plan lists six hours), with a swim stop and a seafood lunch on board. Then the drive to Ninh Binh.
  • Day 3. Climb the 500 steps of Hang Mua for the view. Visit the temples of Hoa Lu, the old capital. Take a rowing boat through the karst landscape of Trang An. Drive back to Hanoi.

Nights are in hotels in Ha Long City and Ninh Binh. It is a full program.

A simple four-day plan: arrive and take the half-day city tour that afternoon. Start the loop the next morning. If the client has five days, put the full-day city tour before the loop instead. For more background on Ninh Binh, see our Ninh Binh travel guide.

Who to sell each length to

  • 2 days: clients on a beach-focused trip who want a taste of Hanoi. Arrival day plus the full-day city tour.
  • 3 days: the default for first-time visitors. One city tour plus one day trip.
  • 4 days: clients who want Ha Long and Ninh Binh without a long day in the car each way. Half-day city tour plus the 3-day loop.
  • More time: clients who also want the hills. Look at longer northern programs such as Tonkinese Wonders (6 Days). It adds Mai Chau, Cuc Phuong National Park and one night on a Ha Long cruise.

If a client asks for Hanoi, Ha Long, Ninh Binh and Sapa in three days, say clearly that it does not fit. Saying so early builds trust.

What to avoid

  • A Ha Long day trip in a two-day stay. It takes the whole day and leaves almost no time for the city.
  • A full program on arrival day. Long-haul clients need a soft start.
  • Booking both city tours. They cover the same core sights.
  • Promising what the tours do not include. The city tours stop outside the mausoleum; they do not list a visit inside. Kayaking in Ha Long and lunch on the city tours are extra.
  • Ignoring the season. Hanoi is cool and fairly dry from December to February. Average highs in January are around 20 °C. From May to September it is hot, humid and much wetter. Plan midday breaks in summer and pack layers in winter. Our best time to visit Vietnam guide has the month-by-month view.
  • Hotels far from the centre. On a short stay, a hotel near Hoan Kiem Lake or the Old Quarter saves time every day.
  • Travel over Tet without a warning. In 2027, the first day of Tet falls on 6 February. Many services slow down and transport is busy. See our Tet 2027 guide.

Agent checklist before you confirm

  • Arrival time known, and Day 1 adjusted to it
  • One city tour chosen, not two
  • Day trip or 3-day loop chosen and explained to the client
  • Inclusions checked on the package page: meals, kayak, entrance fees
  • Guide language confirmed. The package pages list an English-speaking guide. Ask us early if your clients need German or Russian.
  • Onward flight or train booked with a buffer
  • Entry rules checked for the client’s passport. See our Vietnam visa and entry rules.

A good Hanoi block is short, calm and well paced. That is what clients remember.

Next step: send us your client’s dates, arrival time and hotel wishes through the VietOne contact page. We will quote the Hanoi block for you.
