Vietnam over Christmas and New Year is five holidays in one country — and January 2026 was the busiest month the country has ever had. Here is what to sell, what to warn about, and the dates that matter for winter 2026–27.

Why festive Vietnam is the easiest sale of the year
December 2025 brought more than two million international arrivals and January 2026 set an all-time record of 2.5 million, with European arrivals up around 60% year on year. The reasons are structural: 45-day visa-free entry for most European and Russian passports, twelve non-stop routes from Europe, a dry season across the whole south, and prices that still undercut Thailand and Bali on the ground. Vietnam’s official target for 2026 is 25 million visitors, and the winter is where the growth lives.

Long-term averages from climate records; sea temperatures are December figures. Late 2025 saw record floods in Hoi An and Hue in October–November, so the central coast is a January-onwards beach.
The takeaway: put the beach in the south, the culture in the centre and the “winter” in the north — and use the month-by-month weather guide when a client insists on a specific region.
The gala dinner conversation: have it early
Almost every four- and five-star resort in Vietnam adds a compulsory gala dinner on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, charged per person and usually payable at the hotel. It is the single most common source of festive complaints — and entirely avoidable if you say it up front. Verified examples from current rate sheets:

Rules of thumb: budget US$80–140 per adult per gala at upscale resorts and US$270–360 at the ultra-luxury tier; children usually pay half. Room rates run roughly 15–30% above November between 20 December and 5 January, and Ha Long luxury cruises apply a non-refundable New Year’s Eve gala too. City hotels, boutique properties and homestays mostly do not charge — a useful lever for value-conscious clients.

What actually happens: Christmas in Vietnam
Vietnam has around seven million Catholics, and its cities decorate with real enthusiasm from the first week of December. The mood is festive, the streets are open, and nothing closes.
- Ho Chi Minh City: Notre-Dame Cathedral lit from 1 December to 5 January, the Nguyen Hue walking street “light feast”, the pink Tan Dinh church, Diamond Plaza’s tree and snow castle, and the Pham The Hien Catholic quarter in District 8 with hundreds of metres of nativity scenes. Christmas Eve traffic around the cathedral is legendary — walk, do not drive.
- Hanoi: St Joseph’s Cathedral with its giant tree and 21:00 vigil mass, Hang Ma street selling decorations, and the grand hotels — Metropole, Sheraton, Meliá — dressed for the season. Cool enough for a coat, which northern Europeans love.
- Da Lat: the closest thing to a European Christmas in Vietnam — pine forests, cold mist, illuminated churches across the city and, in 2026, the 11th Da Lat Flower Festival from 19 to 31 December, with a jazz festival and international flower show.
- Hoi An: lanterns, Christmas markets in the Ancient Town and a full-moon lantern night on 22 December 2026. Da Nang stages its first International Lantern Festival on 3–6 December.
- Hotels everywhere: turkey, yule logs, carol singers and Santa on a jet ski. Vietnamese hospitality takes Christmas seriously.
New Year’s Eve 2026: where the countdowns are
City fireworks plans are confirmed in mid-December each year; the 2025–26 season is the best guide to what to expect on 31 December 2026:
- Ho Chi Minh City: the main countdown concert on Nguyen Hue walking street, fireworks over the river from Thu Thiem at midnight (six sites in 2025–26) and rooftop parties along the skyline. Book rooftop dinners by early December.
- Hanoi: countdown stage at Hoan Kiem Lake’s Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc square and fireworks at five city sites; crowds are huge and good-natured.
- Phu Quoc: Sunset Town ran three fireworks shows on 31 December 2025, including the “Kiss of the Sea” spectacle and a double-density midnight finale, with 200 performers. Phu Quoc airport handled 288 flights on 1–4 January 2026, up 27%.
- Nha Trang: the beachfront countdown at 2/4 Square with a 15-minute midnight display — a natural fit for charter guests.
- Da Lat and Ha Long: countdown stages at Lam Vien Square and 30/10 Square.
- Da Nang: note that the city held no public New Year fireworks for 2026, saving them for Tet; the Bach Dang riverside festival and Hoi An’s countdown at An Hoi ran instead. Do not promise Dragon Bridge fireworks on 31 December.

Tet 2027: the second wave, six weeks later
Lunar New Year — Tet Dinh Mui, the Year of the Goat — falls on Saturday 6 February 2027, with New Year’s Eve on Friday 5 February. The Ministry of Home Affairs has proposed a seven-day public holiday from Thursday 4 to Wednesday 10 February; final approval usually comes in the autumn.
Unlike Christmas, Tet does close things: banks and government offices for a week, local restaurants and street stalls for three to seven days, some museums for three to five days. Hotels, hotel restaurants and major attractions stay open, flights and trains sell out weeks ahead, and the atmosphere — flower markets, fireworks, families in ao dai — is the most photogenic week of the year. - Working days: 24 and 25 December are normal working days; 1 January 2027 is a public holiday (Friday), so expect a long-weekend crowd at domestic beaches on 1–3 January.
- Tipping: guides around US$7–10 per day, drivers US$3–4, porters and housekeeping about US$1. A little extra over Christmas is appreciated but never expected.
- Dress: north 10–20 °C (a real jacket for Sapa), centre 20–25 °C with showers, south 30 °C. One suitcase, three climates.
